American Animals 🎟 A good heist flick always sucks me in but this one, unbelievably being a true story, swallowed me whole. I wasn’t expecting such an virtually unknown cast could give such award winning performances. The director deserves a nod the way he weaves the real life characters into the film itself. It was two hours long but left me wanting more. I wouldn’t recommend it for children under 10. #americananimals
Terrific movie. You can read my review for Awards Daily here: http://www.awardsdaily.com/2018/06/23/the-effect-of-suburban-ennui-on-american-animals/

Writer/director Bart Layton, best known for his Bafta award winning documentary, The Imposter, dives into narrative storytelling with the real life story of 4 young men whose attempt at one of the craziest and boldest heists ever turns tragic. Breakout performances from all of its rising stars Barry Keoghan (Dunkirk), Evan Peters (X-Men Apocalypse), American Horror Story), Blake Jenner (Edge if Seventeen) and Jared Abrahamson (Travelers). Also starring the always superb, Emmy winner, Ann Dowd (The Handmaid's Tale) and Udo Kier (Blade, Downsizing). To say this is simply a heist movie isnt giving this film its due depth as it is, by design "slick as fuck" says Layton. Like Scorsese, he plays with music as punctuation and digs deep into his foundation as a documentarian fusing narrative with non-fiction--for the 1sr time we see real life footage of the young men side by side, sharing screen time with the actors. And it works. American Animals is in theaters now.

Spencer Reinhard, Warren Lipka, Eric Borsuk and Chas Allen are four friends who live an ordinary existence in Kentucky. After a visit to Transylvania University, Lipka comes up with the idea to steal the rarest and most valuable books from the school's library. As one of the most audacious art heists in U.S. history starts to unfold, the men question whether their attempts to inject excitement and purpose into their lives are simply misguided attempts at achieving the American dream.
So far this film is only one of 2 films so far this year I've seen that I can say can deserve my highest score, now its not because I hate movies or anything(anyone who knows me knows that's far from it) but It's because this is a film that knows what it wants to do, does everything right and brings us a great cinematic experience.
Yes American animals is a heist film, but It's a really well made and a really tightly written film. The film builds itself up as a fake documentary kind of film where they have the characters talking about their experience many years later and throughout the course of the film we see the gradual downfall of our characters sanity and how doing something like a heist can have a massive impact on the individual.
The problem I had with oceans 8 was that there wasn't really anything presented with the characters that made me interested in them nor was there anything they did that made me really care about them, plus I felt there was no suspense or huge amount of humor that made me more engaged into the film. This film is the opposite in which tension is extremely high during the course of the heist, it featured humor and featured characters that were engaging to watch which made for a more memorable experience.
The performances were spectacular, the script was really tight, plus the films editing is some of the best I've seen in quite some time and the way scene transitions work here are done super well. And the films themes of thinking about the future, young greed and an overall theme about art and its signifigance really added to making this film more enjoyable. Its hard to say with the rest of the year ahead, but this is easily one of the best films of the year.
Throwback to when I saw a screening of American Animals at Sundance followed by a Q&A with the cast. This was probably one of the more interesting and ambitious films in terms of how the story was told since it combines documentary interviews of the real life individuals who took part in the heist with cinematic scenes led by Evan Peters. Definitely one of the more interesting films to blend documentary with dramatic reenactments and I applaud the film for taking that approach. It’s currently playing in theaters and I highly recommend it.
Completing my Ann Dowd compilation comes to an end with American Animals and it ends with a bang! Bart Layton weaves a true crime tale with finesse, detail and more than a few moments of genuine inspiration. Evan Peters us perfection and honestly cranks out a star making performance as the complicated Warren. Barry Keoghan dispkays this nervous restless energy that organicly adds weight to the films stakes. American Animals is a heist film that stands shoulder to shoulder with some of the best and even pays homage to them. Cracking with energy and charisma but then ratcheting up real tension in the third act. An absolute killer soundtrack and great cinematography. This might wind up as one of my favorites this year. #americananimals#bartlayton#evanpeters#barrykeoghan
Some are saying that as far as performers go this is the summer of Josh Brolin. No disrespect as he is a great talent but the last two great films I've seen featured Ann Dowd in small but insanely powerful rolls. I've found her presence intimidating since The Leftovers but Hereditary sealed the deal . Her ability to play a snake in the garden there and then the impact of her performance in American Animals. This is also her summer!#anndowd#hereditarymovie#americananimals

O, irony! It is also a green-eyed monster. "Before, in college, growing up, we were being funneled into this mundane, nickel-and-dime existence. Now we can't ever go back there. Even if we wanted to, they won't let us. That was the point all along. See, we have no choice now but to create something new, someplace else. Believe me, you haven't heard the last of us yet." - Warren Lipka from federal prison to @vanityfair in 2007. This photo: 11 years later at the Sundance Film Festival (Jay L.
