If you are anything like us here at Mosquito Joe, you love to decorate for the holidays. From Halloween to New Year, we decorate our porches and patios with pumpkins, garland, lights and hay bales. They make our homes festive and get us in the mood for fun times with family. Unfortunately, bugs love them just as much. So how can you enjoy your holidays without creating a perfect environment for those unwanted holiday guests? Read on! •Check all decorations for bugs before putting them out on your patio or lawn. Natural décor, including dried flowers and gourds, can be a home to pests.
•Avoid edible decorations in and around your home. Ants and other pests can be drawn to them. Go with dried or artificial décor instead.
•Wreaths can be a great home to mosquitoes and roaches. You hang them on your door, open it and “snap” they head inside. Treat your wreaths with an insecticide regularly.
•Don’t string lights from your home to trees or bushes. This gives a literal highway to outside pests, sneaking past the insecticide barrier your pest control professional put up for you.
•While out decorating, take a minute to trim those trees and bushes that are touching your home. This prevents bugs from using them to get into your home. •Avoid hay bales, pine needles, and other natural materials on your front porch or patio. These can bring in and harbor roaches, spiders, and other pests, even mice and rats.
•Keep up with your normal pest and mosquito control schedules. Cooler weather here in SE Texas only entices many insects to actively find a place to winter. Your home presents the perfect opportunity!
