Where do the lines merge between a family backpacking trip and a landscape photography trip? I've discovered there's a big difference between going on an overnighter with just me and my dog "Pisgah" to capture a sunset and sunrise session with photography as the main objective VERSUS going on a backpacking trip with my family and of course bringing my camera along, but not having photography being the objective.
On a solo photo trip, my load is heavier as there's nobody to split the tent, cooking equipment, and group gear with and I tend to bring my heavier (and more stable) tripod and the majority of my camera kit. Also I get a whole lot less sleep while solo, as the sunset shoot usually leads to an Astrophotography session, then laying down for 3 hours and having the alarm go off at 5am to start the mandatory coffee well before the sun comes up and shooting before sunrise and into mid-morning. And when you're on your own, you have the freedom to go wherever you want to look for different compositions of a location.
With the family trip, my load may be lighter and the camera kit smaller, but there's a bigger responsibility and emphasis on the group wants and needs and you can't just wander off from camp for a couple of hours.
This summer family backpacking trip to one of the most beautiful places in the entire Appalachian Mountains was to @graysonhighlands in Virginia and includes hiking a section of the @appalachiantrail and some of it's spur trails. The key is having packs that fit the kids' sternum and allows adjustability for growth and @deuter makes excellent packs specifically for the kiddos. At camp, I only needed to go 50 yards away to work several compositions of the neighboring trees one evening and the following morning. This keeps daddy close to camp with his fingers crossed for some nice light which fortunately this time I was able to witness! My preference is to take more family trips so the kids can have those experiences like I did growing up, but I make sure to squeeze in some solo photography trips when possible as well.
