The tomato plants are coming along nicely, it always surprises me that even when I plant them at the different times they all seem to catch up to each. This year I am growing 7 different heritage varieties. Last year I managed to preserve enough tomatoes for 6 months but this year I am aiming for a lot more. Which is probably being a bit optimistic. Two of the varieties I am growing my Dad's great great grandma brought the seeds with her when she migrated from England and have been grown within the family for generations so they are extra special to us! Are you growing any new varieties of tomatoes this year?
To those firefighters still fighting the fires, to those who want to, to those who are about to join the ranks, to those who open the hatch, to those who make the ultimate sacrifice.. and to those who bring us wine.
In 1970, San Francisco firefighter Cecil De Loach, and his wife Christine, purchased the Barbieri Ranch in Russian River Valley’s coveted Olivet Road district. .
By 1975, Cecil and Christine had emerged as leaders of the Russian River Valley movement, and were among the first to use the RRV designation on their labels. .
The De Loach’s also championed “sustainable farming” and Christine assisted with drafting the first California Code of Sustainable Winegrowing in 1999. .
Now with their grandson, winemaker Jason De Loach, the tradition continues with Hook & Ladder, a winery the De Loach’s founded in 2003, just down the street from their original De Loach Vineyards. Hook & Ladder, produces limited-production bottling’s from their Russian River Valley estate vineyards. .
Hook & Ladder refers to a type of fire truck - today's truck carries all kinds of grappling gear, including hooked tools, but the firefighting of the 1700’s and 1800’s included long pikes with a hook for pulling down burning thatched roofs to allow water streams to hit the interior of the building. .
Hook & Ladder tasting room is fantastically decorated with firemen’s t-shirts and patches from all over the world. Firefighters are particularly welcome at the estate, receiving a 20 percent discount!
Ok, here is just another nudge to visit - Hook & Ladder is close to the Santa Rosa Airport ..it the can be the first or last place to visit on your trip to our Cottage!

Trying to stay connected with that #WiFi . Still sifting through the harvest this cut of WiFi OG is getting on the trim tables. We get sharp notes of gas followed by a sativa spice that we can’t quite figure out. This cut was a yielder and after she hung on the dryline it came out with beautiful finished red/brown hairs and a nice green tone that lacked that amber that’s so common with various OG’s. Smoke is extremely smooth, with a taste that’s clean gas that follows its nose. #sungrown at our #family -run #homestead turned #farmstead on the #emeraldtriangle#paloverde#paloverdeappellation#humboldt#cali 🌱 #props#ograskalgenetics
Aura was doing a happy dance with me this morning because I was petting her while this all went down. We (the husb and I) always had grand visions of starting a CSA once our wee farm was up and running smoothly but as time went on, we felt that may be a bit more time than we had to invest right now. We grow most of our own food now which is no small task when considering time involvement. Throw on top homeschooling a highschooler, 42 animals (+3 more on the way), my healing practice and art, his music and off farm work, remodling five cabins, and... head explosions. A farming acquaintance had recently approached us about selling direct to their already established CSA starting next year and we laughed. Today they called back to beg. So, looks like we *may* have a new plan. Glad to know we at least have options. ♡
We started putting up the Christmas decor tonight at the homestead.
I can’t help but feel wonder thinking about this coming holiday season.
I’m so excited for late nights curled up with hot chocolate.
Warm and cozy dishes that remind you or togetherness and tradition.
Twinkling lights and snowy mornings... what are you most excited for this holiday season?
I looked up and Timmy had Henry in his lap writing in his little notebook....and then it hit me...i sat in THAT very same spot in my grampas lap writing in his little notebook when I was not much older than Henry! My grampa was a farmer, a plumber/electrition, a business owner and most of all a good man. He took time to teach us things if we would stand still long enough to listen! He loved to teach me about numbers. He would write big long numbers in then teach me how to read them and what it all meant...he was better to me than I deserve and I sure do miss him...but I am grateful for little reminders of him!
