Guess what? I’ve been holding onto this secret for months and I can finally share that @likegoldinc has partnered with the Boys and Girls Club of Philadelphia. I’m super excited that I will be running a middle and high school girls group where we will discuss and complete activities related to self-esteem, goal setting, healthy relationships and more. My program starts in October. Like Gold was just a dream I turned into reality ✨
How do we see ourselves? Part of #BurningMan is the tradition of choosing a “Playa Name”, for use during the event’s duration. Many of us gather a whole lifetime of experiences and connections associated with our name which we internalize and carry with us. Sometimes it’s memories of interactions, or how we feel loved ones expect us to act which can form a picture of how we “should” be.
Choosing a #PlayaName becomes an exercise in allowing self exploration. It permits putting aside accumulated perceptions of others, and helps casting off any outdated parts carried within one’s own self image which may be based on old experiences or interactions. It’s a chance to temporarily cut ties with a built up identity from the outside world, and create a safe environment to explore self-identity outside of what’s expected or projected on us.
I know for me, I spent years starting in 2004 as #CuriousJosh incubating this new sense of self before I “came out” to family and friends back in New York. It gave me a chance to discover who I could become when untethered from my past, and allowed me to find my way to enjoying a new art form in photography.
Then after I had gained confidence in exploring a new direction in life, the photographic art grown from this identity went on to be published in magazines, be part of art shows, and even show up in museums.
The best part is I’ve seen this happen for numerous creatives in our scene! We get a chance to explore where our passions are, which leads to art, relationships, and entire lifestyles more centered around who we truly are internally, or truly want to be.
And as hard as disconnecting from a past life can be with the rise of social media, we’ve also had a rise in acceptance of activities like Burning Man, and other festivals, which hopefully allows people to still rise up and cast off the feelings that something is expected of us, to search for what we are drawn to within ourselves.
I thank and highlight once again @the_infinity_boxes for being such a wonderful example of passion explored into a new life path, and the captivating @karinaveee for such a graceful presence ❤
