Well safe to say the birthday was an eventful one in Queenstown!! Was made to feel very special and loved, as you can see i always had a smile on my face and a bourbon in my hand 😁😂big thanks for the cards and cake and big shout to @iamdaveandirave for organising so much!
Probably my favourite thing about shooting from the air is how you can place the camera exactly where you want it. This shot was taken hovering in the middle of the valley - just enough sunlight sneaking through the trees to light up the mist 🌞
We got to Westport in the evening, immediately getting an eerie feeling from the town as it felt like it had been abandoned. It was built up around gold and then coal mining, so many have left in more recent times, giving this empty feel to it; reminding me almost of an old western town 🤠
My room was a bizarre yet brilliant 14-bed dorm called the ‘surfer room’ that had its own kitchen & couches, giving a cool communal feel. So we decided to make a feast for ourselves, making a huge pot of chilli with some other bits that we shared over some drinks. Once we filled ourselves to the brim, our bus brought us to the nearby beach for a bonfire 🔥 The beach also had an abandoned feel, compounded by it being filled with driftwood, making it feel like we had the place to ourselves. The bonfire was great fun, with a group of about 30 of us making s’mores and drinking late into the evening. We even brought a massive bottle of champagne to celebrate! 🍾 (📸 #2 -5)
We spent the rest of the evening checking out some cool glowing plankton on the shore and heading back to town to hit up a dingy local bar with its fair share of odd characters making for a very entertaining way to finish off a great night!
We mustered up the energy to get up at 7am for surfing, with some of us taking a lesson which seemed like the right choice for starting our illustrious careers off on the right track 🏄🏽♂️👌 We headed to a nearby bay where we had the waves to ourselves, getting a quick lesson before we headed in to test our skills, where I learned that I use a ‘goofy-footed’ stance. I managed to stand up on my first wave, so I was chuffed with myself but, it was definitely beginner’s luck as I had quite a bit of trouble standing for the next hour or so!
After that though, I think I got the knack and began to get fairly consistent with standing, so I was happy out by the end! After about 2 hours amongst the 3ft waves we headed back to the minibus, exhausted and delighted with the experience.
