We were camping up on the Blue Ridge Parkway in the spring. It began as a glorious day while we broke camp. My turn to drive, no problem. I enjoy it. Hooked up the trailer and began the short drive to the next camp ground. Should be about a 3 hour drive...Then came the cloud. I say cloud not clouds, because it seemed like one continuous cloud. Up that high, there had been warning signs all along that we should be aware of hazardous conditions because of low hanging clouds, but we had not experienced any up until that day. The road up there is twisty, significant drop offs without railings most of the way. It had been no problem up until then. Down to 17 miles an hour. For the next 5 hours. No place to pull off we could not see the side of the road! We could sometimes see a lightening of the cloud off to the right where we knew there was no foliage and a big drop off. Then it happened...I turned the corner! And this was my gift. A dogwood in full bloom highlighted by the high key background of the cloud. The bark was magnificently dark because of all the moisture. It took my breath away. No place to pull off-3 miles from camp.
Check in as fast! Partner is driving now. I am gathering camera gear. Back to THE TREE. Quick drop off. Still clouds! No place to really stop, so we took a chance. He said he would drive as far as he could and find a place to turn around and come back. If I wasn't finished, just wave him on and he would find another place to turn around and come back. Photographing as fast as I could so I would not loose the light or the cloud! He comes back. I wave him on. Photograph some more. Finished as he pulled around again. What a magnificent gift! Only God brings all those elements together at the same time. We were privileged to witness and photograph it.
Enjoy all the gifts you are given.
