Isis is the daughter of Nut and Geb. She is the wife of her brother Osiris and they had a son, Horus. Osiris and Isis ruled the Gods until one day, Osiris was murdered by their brother Set. Isis resurrected Osiris and he was able to father Horus. Set found out about this, and once again destroyed him. Isis used her powers once more and gave Osiris eternal life, then ran away to raise her son Horus, in secret.
Isis eventually absorbed the roles and titles of many previous Egyptian goddesses such as Hathor, Bast, Mut, Nekhebet and Serket. Her main roles though, were mother, fertility goddess, and the goddess of healing and magic.
She had vast magickal gifts and an understanding of spoken magick and power. Isis managed to master her gifts and in her ambition, she poisoned the god Ra and offered to heal him in exchange for her secret name. When he told her, all of Ra’s personal power and knowledge was transferred to Isis.
Isis is revered as an excellent mother and a fertility and earth goddess. She is a protector of children and mothers and a patron of women.
Isis was associated will all of the elements. Air through her associations with winds, earth for her role as a fertility goddess, water because she was linked to the flooding of the Nile and fire due to the fact that she was a solar goddess who was described as the Maker of the Sunrise and the Brilliant One in the Sky.
Isis eventually replaced Hathor on the solar barque (the ship the dead took to heaven), and she also absorbed many of the other funerary roles. She ended up having so many different areas of influence that she became known as The Lady of Ten Thousand Names.
