Happy Earth Day! Life at the poles is very fragile. Warming temperatures are threatening habitat and food supply. As we get closer to Earth Day I wanted to remind us all of the amazing creatures on this planet. This photo was taken in Svalbard while aboard the MSOrigo in 2017. Stunning landscape, the home of the polar bear. We had an amazing evening walkabout with this polar bear on land while we shot from our two zodiacs. I am still smiling whenever I see these pictures. We need to remind ourselves how fragile this habitat is...so everything we do impacts the very survival of this animal. In honour of Earth Day this Sunday I will be posting landscape and wildlife photos from my collection....what an amazing world we live in. This is taken at Laguna Colorado in the altiplano in Bolivia, nearly 4,300 meters high (over 14,000 feet). These flamingoes survive on the brine found in these lakes. Even in what to us seems like the middle of nowhere nature is resilient. Salar de Uyuni in southwest Bolivia, right at the edge of the Andes. This is the largest salt flat in the world...over 10,500 square km! And did you know the salt is over 10 meters thick in the centre? Gentoo penguins in Yankee Harbour on our last landing in the South Shetland Islands. This long rocky beach was inhabited by a large Gentoo penguin colony, Weddell and Antarctic fur seals, and the occasion skua. We were so lucky to be able to walk so closely amongst these playful creatures.
